ABOUT ZABE

Zabe is a Nigerian-British painter whose work explores identity, culture, and visibility through portraiture. Rooted in the experiences of the African diaspora, her paintings reflect on perception, self-definition, and the tension between expectation and individuality.

Working primarily through figurative painting, Zabe creates intimate portraits that celebrate the complexity of Black identity while challenging cultural stereotypes and inherited ideas of who we are meant to become. Her subjects often exist between heritage and modern individuality, carrying themes of memory, belonging, performance, and personal expression.

Through her practice, Zabe aims to create work that feels both reflective and confrontational, questioning the ways people are seen while reclaiming space for identities that exist beyond expectation.
